How to deal with hair breakage
April 05, 2023, by ZadecaiAs much as hair fall is a serious issue, hair breakage is no less uncommon these days. It doesn’t matter whether you are losing a few strands or a hefty chunk, hair breakage can always feel overwhelming and stressful. The topic of hair breakage surely induces anxiety, but the good thing about it is that hair breakage has more to do with bad styling habits than more pressing or bigger concerns. Among some of the prominent root causes of hair breakage are excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, over-brushing and poor nutrition.
Health Shots got in touch with Dr Navya Handa, consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist, at Primus Super Speciality Hospital, to understand how to deal with hair breakage.
Tips and tricks to reduce hair breakage
The silver lining in this topic of hair breakage is that it is mostly an outcome of bad hairstyling habits which can easily turn around to bring back your hair health under control.
1. Say no to hair styling tools
Hair styling tools are one of the major causes of hair breakage. We all know that your hair can make or break your entire look. So, when you are up for a party, you can’t stop but style your hair using different tools to look your best. Our expert says, “Try to keep away from these tools as much as possible. If you must use a heat styling tool, use a heat protectant spray to protect your hair from damage.”
2. Avoid over-washing your hair
“Overwashing can deplete your hair’s natural lipids, making it brittle and prone to damage. Wash your hair no more than once every other day,” shares the expert.
3. Use a gentle cleanser or shampoo
Using a rough hair shampoo that is filled with sulfates, parabens and other harmful chemicals strip off your hair’s natural oils and cause breakage. Instead, always opt for a gentle cleanser that is devoid of these harmful chemicals that leaves your hair smooth and healthy.
4. Condition your hair frequently
Condition your hair on a frequent basis. At least once a week, use a deep conditioning treatment to keep your hair hydrated and healthy. Using a conditioner post-shampoo leaves your hair frizz-free.
5. Your diet is important
Whatever you feed your body, reflects in your skin and hair. The expert suggests everyone consume a nutritious diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals to promote hair health and prevent breakage.
6. Avoid harsh chemicals
Chemical procedures like hair coloring, relaxing, and perming can damage and break your hair. If you are a fan of these treatments and can’t contain yourself, then you should try to do so less frequently or with milder formulations.
7. Be gentle with your hair
“Try not to yank, tug, or brush your hair too hard. Detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb and avoid brushing it when it’s damp,” suggests the expert. Just like you are gentle with your skin, you need to do the same with your hair.
You can help prevent hair breakage and encourage healthy hair with these tips. If your hair breakage still persists, seek guidance from a dermatologist or a hair care professional.
